EXCURSIONS TO THE
MINES
The excursions to the old iron mines are one of the most involving
activities on the island. The visits can be organized in the
southern part of the island (Monte Calamita and Capoliveri)
and in the north-east (Miniere del Riese, Rio nell’Elba
and Rio Marina). At Monte Calamita, the height of the trip
is the entrance to the spectacular mine of Ginevro which lies
54m below sea level. The Calamita mines offer some of the
most beautiful panoramas on the island. The Monti di Rio mines,
immersed in a unique atmosphere, allow various mines to be
visited that can be reached from the local villages by means
of footpaths of varying difficulty. In both cases, there are
two mineral museums to be visited.
Rio Marina: entrance to Mineral Park exhibition and
visit to the mines. Short visit € 5,50, long visit €
7,50.
Capoliveri: excursion with a guide to Calamita and Ginevro
mines € 12,00 per person (including transport).
