BIOWATCHING: NATURAL LANDSCAPES OF THE NATIONAL PARK OF THE
TUSCAN ARCHIPELAGO.
Since the Classical Period, the deforestation of the Holm
Oak (Quercus ilex) has resulted in the degradation of the
forests. The Etruscans, who 2500 years ago began the metallurgical
industry, sistematically deforested the island in order to
extract the precious hematite. Trees that grow more easily
and quickly soon took over the territory and replaced the
Holm Oak that used to cover all the islands of the Mediterranean.
However the real treasure of Elban nature is the sheer variety
of habitats that cover this small island (of only 224 km2).
Extreme environments such as the dunes, the final remains
of the Tuscan archipelago, support species that have become
rare thanks to the destruction of the beaches during the growth
of the tourism industry. From March to October there are approximately
35 species of wild orchid in bloom on Elba. A wonderful show
of colour and form in one of the most recent biologically-evolved
family of plants.
